Day 17 - Corin Raymond Brings Music Back Home Again

If John Prine's debut holds a special place in your heart, you may fall head over heels in love with Corin Raymond's "There Will Always Be A Small Time". There's the self-deprecating sense of humor, wordplay that seems so simple until you try it and aw-shucks phrasing that tugs at the heart and burrows into the soul. The Toronto-based songwriter writes simple, direct songs that make a pure, straight connection from artist to listener.

"There Will Always Be A Small Time" celebrates shared moments in small rooms, a million stars of varying brightness shining "when the nine-to-fivers go to bed". Raymond sees a rising star ("Nearly everywhere I go I hear you on the radio") and while sending well wishes, also leaves out the welcome mat for a return "now and then". He's ready for his big break (should it come), but if it doesn't come he can still play the local every Thursday night. It's a woe-is-me tale without the woe, just the belief that the song will always endure, no matter when and where it is sung.

"Music's come back home again
Nowadays we're playing in the parlors
Like the way they used to do
Oh the big times they are a-changing fast
The only thing that's gonna last
Is that folks like us sing songs for folks like you"

Hat tip and thanks to the wonderful songs:illinois blog for the illumination.

is Big Brother Watching you

From a social experiment to a cash cow to the goose that laid the salmonella infected egg. Big Brother comes to an end this year. Already Channel 4 is starting the overkill that will accompany the shows launch next month. This show has done more than most to create eyesores on the television landscape, with its legacy of numerous reality based Television ideas.

What started out as a shot in the dark quickly became a fast track to celebrity status. In the first season it had residents that were allowed to read books, look after chickens and have uncensored discussions. They also got their clothes off day one thus making any titillation redundant. The show had a pantomime villain and was rather compelling as it seemed quite fresh. It is notable that the winner, Scouser Craig, gave the prize money to charity and didn’t have a load of skeletons in his closet. He is probably the most ordinary of all the winners.

As each years show came around it soon became clear that the producers of the show (most likely graduates the lot of them) made selections of residents based on inanity and breast size, along with tokenistic selections in terms of sexuality , race and ego.

Big Brother became a conduit for the most awful publicity hungry egotists who tried to be manipulatively outrageous, the sheer tedium meant that viewing figures declined with the result that the people behind the scenes tried ever more desperate attempts to cause controversy.

What Big Brother will leave behind is a black hole full of aspirant celebrity wannabes, pointlessly manufactured personas and a cultural deficit.

It’s ironic that the very name of the show comes from Orwell’s 1984 and relates to loss of free will and identity. To fiddle with the words of George Orwell;

"Don't you see that the whole aim of Reality TV is to narrow the range of thought? Has it ever occurred to you, Winston, that by the year 2010, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?... The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking—not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."

- George Orwell, 1984, Book 1, Chapter 5

"I think it is in collaboration that the nature of art is revealed." ~Steve Lacy

For awhile now I have been watching the career of photographer James Johnson skyrocket. JJ (only I can call him that...it's Mr.Johnson to you) is not just a photographer I admire, he also happens to be a friend. You may remember reading about JJ here before, I have written about my boy wonder a few times. I met him at the beginning of his career and was immediately impressed with his passion and enthusiasm for his craft. He was young and new to the industry, so I tried to guide him when I could but he really didn't need much help at all, I was just more or less being over-protective of my young rookie friend. But he has definitely come along way in a short time. Hell, he even has his own website now:
"James Johnson Photography"

Yes, my baby is all grown up...

We have been discussing shooting together FOREVER, but our schedules always conflicted or someone cancelled..etc, etc, etc. However...last Saturday: The day finally came!! Finally!!
It was so great to shoot together as a team, like "Shaq and Kobe" as JJ said...and apparently I'm "Shaq"...lol. It was amazing to watch him work and see how happy and at ease he is doing what he loves and doing it well...

The look on his face when he saw my kit was priceless...

And that is only a quarter of my actual kit...

The shoot was a preliminary ad campaign for a new perfume developed and created by
Ryan "Scoop" Davis (also the male counterpart in the pix) called "Silent Seductress". The photographs are to be used to help the scent make its way into stores. And JJ nailed it...

The model Kari Cabrera also had James snap some l pix for her port after the perfume shoot. She looked fab and the camera loved her. She was also a total doll to work with!!

Basically it was an amazing day with an amazing team. I loved working with JJ, Ryan created a gorgeous scent and the beautiful Kari was a joy to work with and her face was a great canvas.

Day 16 - The Baseball Project - 30 Doc

Teenage Kicks salutes Roy Halladay, who last night threw the 20th perfect in major league history. Even goofy mascot Billy the Marlin is excited (check out the video at 0:19), and his team just lost 1-0.

Teenage Kicks also wishes the Phillies a speedy recovery from their monstrous hitting malaise.

"Let me ask you something, what is not art?" ~Author Unknown

As I have made perfectly clear, I am off MAC. Don't get me wrong, more than a few of their products will always be in my kit and on my face, but almost all of em all are from their permanent line or from collections long past. Their newer collections have bored me to tears and failed to meet ol' skool MAC standards.

However, that being said, I have to give credit where credit is due...

Recently in Toronto at a MAC Acrylic Paint promotion, 22 MAC artists put their body painting skills to the test...and kicked ass. The majority of these looks were achieved with MAC Acrylic Paint which will launch in August. Onlookers watched as the artists painted type design on nude models...and I'm sure they were watching in amazement as the result was fierce. Have a look...
