Bernina went to the Doctor...

Machine Quilting on the Raffle Quilt has come to a screeching halt...

My beloved Bernina is not well, poor baby.

I took her to the doctor today...

I have neglected her for 18 months.

Using her almost daily and putting off regular maintenance check ups.

I ignored the signals: thread jams, thread breakage, poor tension.

Finally yesterday I decided it was time...

I packed her up and took her to town...

She had an appointment with the Bernina Doctor.

It seems my use of basting sprays has been awful hard on her...

Especially in the bobbin housing.

Not that I have to stop using basting sprays..... NEVER!

I need to use a different needle, I also need to clean her more often, and bring her in for her yearly physical exam....not every 18 months.

Here is the bad part...

She won't be ready for 2 weeks!!!

When I get her back and have more time to talk to the technician, I will share with you what I learned.

The Great Lost Band Of The 90s

There's general agreement round Bagging Area's way that One Dove's Morning Dove White is the great lost album of the 90s, packed with Weatherall's production, great songs, Dot Allison's vox and loads of after-club atmosphere. In their limited back catalogue there's a few other gems- I've posted their cover of Jolene and the Weatherall remix of Breakdown (Squire Black Dove rides Out). This song, Skanga, was tucked away on the Why Don't You Take Me single (various formats, cd, 12" double pack etc). I think by this point the record company were getting a little desparate for a hit. Skanga is five and a half minutes of dub-house loveliness with a strangely off key vocal from Dot. What's bemusing is why the album featured two versions of two of the songs, White Love and Breakdown (it had both the superior Weatherall mixes and inferior Stephen Hague radio mixes of each song), when this and Jolene would've made an eleven track beauty. But then whoever thought record companies knew what they were doing?

Jason And The Scorchers Tonight!

For those of you in the Philadelpia-New Jersey-New York corridor, there is a show tonight that demands your attention - the return of Jason and The Scorchers. Unfortunately it's in the godforsaken hinterlands of Bucks County, and even though I've been to the Sellersville Theater three times, I still don't where it is. God bless GPS.

I was going to go for a Bunnymen hat-trick with an obscure late period B-side but judging by the download stats no-one's that interested, so instead here's a superb piece of space disco from 1977, Space Woman by Herman's Rocket. Containing far less cosmic cheese than The Ultimate Warlord from a few weeks back, this is a great track with a huge synth bassline.

Here it is, the song that's been in my head all day- The Game by Echo And The Bunnymen. It's the last great Bunnysong by the original line-up, released in 1987 as the first single ahead of their self-titled fifth album (otherwise known as the grey album). The album was panned, the band didn't like it, or each other. Result? The US loved it, it sold half a million, they did a tour of enormo-domes, and later co-headlined the Monsters Of Alternative Rock (ugh) tour with New Order.

I woke up this morning with Echo And The Bunnymen's The Game playing in my head- not sure why, maybe it's September becoming October and that stuff in The Game about changing seasons and everybody having their own good reason why their favourite season is their favourite season. Maybe not.

I've just realised I don't have The Game on the hard drive, so it'll have to wait until later in the week. In the meantime, here's a crackers remix of Thorn Of Crowns. Go Home Productions Mark Vidler has produced many wonderful mash-ups, including Ray Of Gob and How Soon Is Independance, both featured previously at Bagging Area. This isn't a mash up. It's Thorn Of Crowns (possibly my least favourite track from Ocean Rain 'the greatest album ever made', the one where McCulloch goes 'c c c cucumber, c c c cauliflower, c c c cabbage') remixed with an in-yer-face electronic backing. The band apparently loved it. I imagine Bunnymen purists will hate it. I'm somewhere in between. See what you think.

Marvel's Conan The Barbarian

Conan The Barbarian, known to most as a lumbering Arnold Schwarzenegger, to some as the main character in the pulp 1930’s novels of Robert E Howard and soon to be immortalised on screen by Jason Momoa. To many Conan was introduced through the pages of Marvel comics in the early 70s under the author ship of Roy Thomas and the seminal artwork of Britain’s Barry Smith. For those comic book aficionados bought up on super heroes, secret identities and bloodless battles Marvel's Conan the Barbarian had a distinctly grown up feel; sound effects free and featuring disembowelment and nudity amidst the mysticism.  

Thomas' storytelling used rich dialogue free from cliche and it was most definitely Smith's pre-Raphaelite leanings that added the beauty to offset the violence. 

The run of Thomas and Smith did not run for long but was a watershed moment for Marvel and led them to diversify into different more adult orientated formats. The audience that comics had built in the 60s was growing older and more sophisticated and Marvel realised this with the success of the Conan books. Moving into longer paged publications and using black and white Marvel developed Conan into a darker and more brutal character, and it was these books The Savage Sword of Conan that met the needs of the fan base who were now adults. Thomas stayed with the character and was joined by John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala and the stories they produced were almost novels in comic book form. The success of the SSoC was what led to Hollywood interest. Like anyone who has followed a fictional character through TV, Movies or Books the path that Conan has taken in the hands of Marvel has been an interesting one. Falling outside the margins of the comic books of the seventies Conan represented the moment that Comic books and their readers grew up.

Bobbin Thread

Bottom Line Yellow #601

Superior Threads Product

It blends in and melts into the backing fabric.

To stitch around all of the applique motifs, I chose Bottom Line very pale gray.

It almost disappears into the fabrics on the top side of the quilt.

Just what we need.

Thread Audition

The Neutral was too boring.

The Blue was not right.

The Green was the best fit.

I keep two lights directly above the sewing machine.

I also have a Bendable Brite Lite mounted on the side of the machine.

I am never at a loss for light.

I can see extremely well with this set up.

I never have trouble with eye strain.

Thread Stand

The Thread Stand is mounted on the back of the machine.

It feeds crosswound thread from off the top of the spool.

It feeds stacked threads from the side of the spool.

It also holds large cones still, no wobble.

Since getting the stand a few years ago, I never have issues with the threads feeding improperly......thread delivery goes smoothly.

The Thread Stand also makes a great place to stash bobbins.

Dyna Disc

I tried this disc in a class, one of my students offered to allow me to try hers.

They are wonderful!

It takes all the pressure off your lower back.

I can quilt for hours and never have any pain.

Because the Bottom Line Thread is so fine, I am using a 60 needle, which I prefer anyway, because it makes such a tiny hole in the quilt.

I generally lower my top tension when Free Motion Quilting

Practice Sandwich

I warm up on a practice sandwich to check my thread tension and see if I like the quilting motif.

The background quilting is a feather variation.

You can see the stitching much better when I turned off the overhead lighting.

4 hours of Free Motion Machine Quilting so far...

I am about half way done...

Hoping to finish this tomorrow~

I am working with a deadline on this quilt, so I had to be disciplined and stay indoors and quilt today...

But this view out in the yard, made it very difficult...
