Death In St. Petersburg

This popped up earlier on random play and I'd forgotten how good it was- Death In Vegas' Dirge (Cossack Apocalypse Mix). Part of a 12" remix promo of Dirge (with One Dove's Dot Allison on vox) the other side was the Adrian Sherwood dub remix I posted ages ago. This remix takes DiV to Russia with a lovely extended finger picking intro and some vocal samples, then ramping up the ramshackle groove for eight minutes, all mist, fog, fur hats, revolutionaries and cossacks on horseback. The remix was by The Chocolate Layers, Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey of Pulp who provided a remix of Black Box Recorder posted here last month. This is a really good remix if somewhat unsuited to the glorious sunshine we've got in M33 at the moment.

When You Kiss The Base Of My Spine

This is a funny one- Scorpio Rising was the title track off Death In Vegas' third album back in 2002, featuring guest appearences from Hope Sandoval, Liam Gallagher and Paul Weller, some electroclash, some of their scuzzy fuzzy rock/dance stuff and tons of rather good Bollywood strings. This remix came off the Scorpio Rising single- the other remix was by loopy robe wearers The Polyphonic Spree. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to get The Scientist to rework this rock song as a dub reggae track, while still keeping Liam Gallagher's none more raspy vocal, deserves a pat on their back for their sense of humour if nothing else. I think it works pretty well surprisingly, though Liam's album length collaboration with Lee Perry or The Mad Professor remains something we'll just have to imagine.

Watch Out For The Black Acid Man

As Death In Vegas fizzled out (and they had a fair few moments- bits of the big beat first album Dead Elvis, guest vocalist heavy The Contino Sessions, the Bollywood/electro-clash, Liam G and Paul Weller Scorpio Rising, some of the krauty one I can't remember the name of) Richard Fearless relocated to New York and resurfaced in 2008 with a new band- Black Acid. 'The dark soulful psychedelic rock of Death In Vegas with a new twist' according to the press guy. This song F.U.R. was the A-side of a single, and takes the scuzzy synth-punk of Suicide as it's starting point, and it isn't half bad, if you like that kind of thing. On the B-side, Glitter In The Gutter, it's distorted slo-mo garage rock. It's the only thing by them I've either got or heard, but the rock is winning over the dance in Black Acid.
