Perpetual Dawn, Infinite Sunrise

I thought I'd posted this before, but apparently not- one of the Orb's best moments, Perpetual Dawn. Lovely ambient-techno-dub, all the way from 1991, with a great reggae vocal telling us 'The storm is raging'. It also features a great 'blurbrbbrrb' vocal part. This record is twenty years old and still sounds like tomorrow.

This is pretty rare I think, and I'm fairly sure I got it from a blog I visit often recently-ish. I can't remember where. If it was yours and you're upset I'm reposting it, I'm sorry (insert smily face emoticon here). It came on the music player in the car on the way home from work yesterday and nearly took the top of my head off. Primal Scream's Higher Than The Sun re-remixed by The Orb. It's not that different from the Screamadelica version, just longer, spacier and trippier. And then some.

Transit Kings are Dr. Alex Paterson, Jimmy Cauty and Guy Pratt of respectively The Orb, The KLF and bass sessionista/late era Pink Floyd, so you can probably imagine what this sounds like but don't let that put you off. This is upbeat, nicely laid back electronic music with twinkly piano and guest guitar by Johnny Marr. He's been popping up all over the place round here recently. Very pleasant, not as muso-ey as it could, and good for diverting your attention away from whatever's sucking your soul out on Saturday night TV. Yeah, I know you don't watch X Factor, it was your husband/wife/significant other who had it on...

Reggae inspired Perpetual Dawn (Ultrabass 2) from 1991, remixed by Weatherall. 'Music that tells about the future, music that explains history', the vocal declares, and then 'Roots music', repeatedly. Dub-house brilliance from all involved.

It's all been a bit guitary round here recently. Not that that's a bad thing but to balance it up a bit here's some wonderful ambient house from The Orb. There were myriad versions of this, including the first batch of singles that included Minnie Ripperton's vocal sample (subsequently removed by lawyers), and versions across 7", 12" and cd that stretched from three minutes thirty four seconds to nineteen minutes seven seconds, and also different mixes and remixes. There were Peel Session versions and the lovely Aubrey Mixes (the Aubrey Mixes album was deleted on the day it was released). This version is five minutes twelve seconds long, and from a dance compilation album. I'm not entirely sure which version it is off the top of my head, and I'm resisting the trainspotter tendencies within me to figure it out. Surely if this ambient house business is going to work we can't get all twitchy over versions and mixes can we? I'm sure someone can enlighten us.
