Magnetic Pincushions...

Today I spent the day making a few party favors...

Magnetic Pincushions

I have to admit....this was a fun project!

This little plate measures about 3 inches across.
It has a magnet glued to the bottom, so the pins stay put.

I found it at the thrift store for less than a dollar.
Wouldn't this be sweet on your sewing table, and it wouldn't take up much room either.

Very Round Kitty Cat
Just throw the pins at the plate, and they stick to it!

Rose

Polk a Dots

Ice Cream Sundae

Circles

Ice Cream Cone

These all came from thrift shopping.
What a great way to recycle...

Here is how I did it:

Glue a magnet on the bottom of each plate

You only need one heavy duty magnet (left plate)
or
3 Regular magnets (right plate)

All Purpose Adhesive works fine.

Time to wrap them up:

Square piece of sparkly tulle and ribbon make the perfect gift wrapping

Magnetic Pincushions ready for gift giving...

I think each one cost under $2 to make, including the wrapping.

Go get busy.....your friends would love one of these!

Texture Magic Projects...

I decided to get right with it and make something with those Texture Magic pieces I steamed up yesterday!

Let's see what the day brings...

I was a bit disappointed that the free motion quilting on the sunflower is barely visible.
However, I just love all that texture and color.
I just can't let it go to waste...

Notebook Cover & Pincusion

I have kept a written journal for nearly 20 years now.
It is about time I had a hand made cover.

Texture Magic Pincushion
This is packed full of those little polyester pellets.
It is nice and heavy and will stay where I put it!

This is the brown piece I steamed up yesterday...

I decided against a binding...
I didn't want to flatten down the edges:

I traced a line, following the irregular shape of the edge from steaming it.
Then I placed it face down on the backing fabric.
Pretty sides together for stitching...

Stitching all the way around the quilt sandwich following the drawn line

Trim the edge leaving an 1/8 inch seam allowance.
I like a tiny seam allowance when the edges are curvy.

All the edges are trimmed and this is ready to turn right side out...
No...I didn't leave an opening for turning...

I cut an opening in the back for turning.
Later I will cover up the slit with a label...

All turned right side out...
I am happy with the organic shape of this piece.

Auditioning Beads & Embellishments...

Time to take this into the house so I can sip a cup of coffee and put my feet up while I sew on the beads.

I picked up this little bead tray for $1.50 at the bead shop last week.
It works great for sprinkling out the beads I want to work with, keeping them sorted & separate from each other.

I have ignored these two all day...
It is time to take them out for a JOY RIDE!

Quilted Sunflower Pincusion...

Another fun & fast project:

Quilted Sunflower Pincushions
5 x 6 inches

Layer a gorgeous fat quarter of fabric with batting and backing fabric into a quilt sandwich. I spray basted it together.

Choose a thread to quilt it.
Audition several colors until one appeals to you.

Drop the feed dogs, put on a darning foot and free motion til the cows come home!

You could also put on the walking foot and stitch straight lines in a grid pattern.

If you choose a fabric with a large motif, like the sunflowers, it gives you a design to quilt around.......and it's lots of fun!
This is a very manageable size and very good practice for machine quilting!

Cut up the fat quarter quilted sandwich into 9 sections, like a 9 patch block.
These measure approx. 5 x 6 inches each.

Choose a backing fabric for the back side of your pincushion.
Layer it with batting and spray baste the two layers together.

You are ready to sew your pincushion together.
Pretty sides together, top and bottom of pincushion.
I sewed a quarter inch all the way around.....leaving a space for turning it right sides out.

Here is my first pincushion sewn and ready to stuff.
I like these polyester pebbles, the size of rice.

Fill the bags nice and full, then whip stitch the opening closed.
