Woven Quilt #3.......Has gone green!

This is a sample from a class I taught last week...

I made 3 different woven quilts
This is the third one

I brought it to class without a border...

This is why~

The weaving is done
I am ready to audition border options

The black leaves caught my attention and were begging for a black border.
So......I pulled out my stash of black and whites and put them up on the design wall.

None of them looked quite right.
So, I sent images to my color and design Guru, Nancy...

This is what I learned from her:

This black fabric looks gray compared to the woven quilt

This fabric has too much white
It is competing for attention with the leaves.

This isn't quite as bold as the previous fabric, but again, the white isn't working.

The circles are too whimsical against the bold black leaves

The very thin lines are rather wimpy next to the bold inner design

I tried nearly 20 fabrics and nothing worked.

I took all of these fabrics and Nancy auditioned them for the students in the woven quilt class last week.......sort of a color and design lesson for the students.
She discussed the merits of each fabric and why it did not work.

The students kept commenting........how about a green border?
How about a green border?
How about a green border?
It almost became a chant...

Luckily our quilt class was in a Quilt Shop...
Nancy pointed to a gorgeous bolt of gradiated green fabric

What do you think?

I removed the black inner border...

I plan to machine quilt leaves in the background area.
I didn't want the black inner border competing with the stitching.

Quilt Pounce Chalk applied over this leaf stencil

Chalked Leaf impression for me to stitch over

All of the stitching is done on the leaf

Remove the Quilt Pounce Chalk with an iron
It disappears like magic!

A stitched leaf motif
After the chalk has been ironed away

The next leaf has been chalked
I am ready to stitch around it...

"The Woven Oak"

Thanks to my students......I have gone green!
I just love this border treatment.

5:00 I am ready to call it a day and head back to the house.
As I push myself away from the sewing machine...
This is the view I see each day...

Surfing Waves of Heartbreak with Gold Motel

The pop song lives!

Greta Morgan (late of Chicago's The Hush Sound, who I must confess I never heard of until last week) and her new group, Gold Motel, recall the piano-based melodicism of the three Bens - Folds, Kweller and Lee. The songs are steeped in heartbreak and the possibility of romance, but getting your heart stomped never sounded so good. Imagine a less wobbly She & Him or a less self-conscious Rilo Kiley, and you'll get a sense of Gold Motel's new wave meets Brill Building shotgun wedding.

There are five songs on their debut EP, called EP (!), and I can't pick a favorite. Is it the girl group kiss-off of "Don't Send The Searchlights"? The bouncy, piano-driven kiss-off of the faded lover in "The Cruel One"? The smoldering torch song "Who Will I Be Tonight?" The rollicking plea of "Make Me Stay"? The unstoppable bounce of "Perfect in My Mind"? The answer is yes. But I say wait a few weeks and spring for their debut full length, Summer House, due out June 1. Maybe then you'll have ten favorites to pick from (and all 5 songs from EP are included). You can order it here.

Gold Motel appears at Connie's Ric Rac (1132 S. 9th St., Philadelphia), this Saturday, May 1.

Summer wedding dressesSummer wedding dresses

summer gown is an informal dress of any shape in a lightweight fabric, most commonly cotton, intended for summer wear. The dress is intended to be worn without a layering top, and the design must therefore cut a balance between modesty and allowing sun exposure. Lilly Pulitzer popularized the summer gown in the 1960s.

The summer gown provides a feminine look that may be lighter and more comfortable than a skirt and blouse, or another sort of dress. Modern styles can feature very low necklines and short hemlines, but more modest lengths and a variety of patterns are also widely available. Summer gown come with many different closure types, including back zippers, side zippers, front buttons, back buttons, back ties, and pullover style. but in the summer, the bride often specially designed, for comfort in wearing a wedding dress, while summer.

Tea length wedding dress | Feminine

Tea length wedding dressTea length wedding dress

A tea gown or tea-gown often used at wedding is a woman's at-home dress of the late 19th to mid-20th centuries characterized by unstructured lines, light fabrics, and frothy or feminine detail.

Every one knows that a tea-gown is a hybrid between a wrapper and a ball dress. It has always a train and usually long flowing sleeves; is made of rather gorgeous materials and goes on easily, and its chief use is not for wear at the tea-table so much as for dinner alone with one's family.

It can, however, very properly be put on for tea, and if one is dining at home, kept on for dinner. Otherwise a lady is apt to take tea in whatever dress she had on for luncheon, and dress after tea for dinner.

One does not go out to dine in a tea-gown except in the house of a member of one's family or a most intimate friend. One would wear a tea-gown in one's own house in receiving a guest to whose house one would wear a dinner dress. – Emily Post, Etiquette, 1922

Vintage wedding dress to vintage clothing is a generic term for new or second hand garments originating from a previous era. The phrase is also used in connection with a retail outlet, e.g. "vintage clothing store." It can also be used as an adjective: "This dress is vintage." The word vintage is copied from its use in wine terminology, as a more elegant-seeming euphemism for "old" clothes. Not less young couples planning, use marriage vintage wedding dresses

Evening wedding dressEvening wedding dress

An evening wedding dress is a long flowing women's dress usually worn to a formal affair. It ranges in length from tea and ballerina to full-length. Gowns are often made of a luxury fabric such as chiffon, velvet, satin, taffeta or silk. Although the terms are used interchangeably, ball gowns and evening gowns differ in that a ball gown will always have a full, flared skirt and a strapless bodice; in contrast, an evening gown can be any silhouette - sheath, mermaid, A-line or trumpet shaped - and may have straps, halters or even sleeves.
