Stewart Gill Colourise Paint

Last week, at the end of a painting session, I put all of the

leftover paint on a white piece of fabric.

Sometimes I wet the white fabric first, and sometimes I don't.

This time I left the white fabric dry, then poured the leftover

paint all over it and scrunched up the fabric.

I also sprinkled a little kosher salt on top.

The secret is to put it out in the sun.

That is when the magic happens.

Allow it to completely dry.

When you open it up you have a lovely

batik-like fabric.

Press it with a hot iron to set the paint.

Stewart Gill offers an excellent line of textile paints.

However, so does Pebeo/Setacolors

and Dye-Na-Flow.

They all perform well for Sun Printing on Fabric.

Painted Fabric Results...

I painted fabric a few days ago...

The majority of it dried quickly in the sun...

I wasn't able to show you the results of the last few pieces that were painted late in the day...

Remember this clean-up cloth?

The metallic gold paint was heavier and settled into the lower portions of the scrunched up fabric.

Clean-Up Cloths are my favorites!

Maybe I should just forget everything else and just make clean-up cloths?

This is the piece I painted with bubble wrap underneath it.

I painted this late in the day, with little sunshine left in the sky.

It never really dried properly, and I brought it indoors for the night.

I had to finish drying it in the morning sun the next day.

I want to try this technique again in the bright sunshine of the afternoon.

I think I will get more defined texture when this dries quickly in the hot sun.

This was the piece that I sprinkled with ground up walnut shells.

It was one of my last pieces, and it was late in the day, with very little sunshine left to dry and sun dye this piece...

It never dried properly, and I had to bring it into the Thread Shed.

It was still wet the next morning....not what I hoped for.

I want to try this technique again in the hot day sun.

The ground up shells give the fabric a grainy texture

I brought home some sand from the beach a few days ago...

I want to try sprinkling sand on painted fabric and see what happens.

That will have to wait until the Fabric Painting Workshop here on Thursday...

Sunshine has finally arrived here in Western Oregon

Time to work in the flowerbeds...

After all the weeding was done...

It was time to set up the soaker hoses

The sun was shining at the perfect angle and you can really see the water spraying from the soaker hoses...

After a day of pulling weeds...

it was rewarding to see the flowerbed looking so pretty.

Tomorrow.....more of the same.

Painting Fabric...

Painting Fabric.....Play Day!

Here are a few pieces that I painted yesterday...

Fabric is approx 21 x 30 inches

Fits nicely on a foam core board during the painting process.

I hung them on the line this morning because I thought it would be easier to photograph them that way...

Yup....as soon as I did....a strong wind came in and blew them around like the sails on a boat!

Sponged Summer Sky

Water

Salted and Folded to dry

Sun Dyeing

I placed a table runner on top of the wet paint, then put it out in the sun to dry.

Came out better than I had hoped for...

Desert Sunset

Autumn Sunset

Sunset over the Ocean

Salt sprinkled over the lower portion

Leftover paint....

Painted in horizontal lines, then folded the fabric accordion style and left to dry.

Mountains or Rocks

After painting, the fabric was scrunched up and put in the sun to dry.

Creates hills and valleys for the paint to accumulate.

Leftover Paint....

I used all of the leftover green paints, then folded it and left it in the sun to dry.

Ground up Walnut Shells

This piece is still drying...

I sprinkled ground up walnut shells on the wet paint, then put it out in the sun to dry.

Hoping the shells will act as a resist?

Bubble Wrap

I placed bubble wrap under the fabric...then painted and salted it.

Hoping the bubble wrap will cause hills and valleys and texturize the piece.

Clean Up Cloth

I just couldn't bare to throw out the leftover paints...

I scrunched up a piece of fabric and poured the last of the paints all over it.

I swiped it here and there with the brushes and sponges.

After it dries I will iron it and post a photo of it.

Clean up Cloths are my favorite!

Jello.......Re-Printing

I had a dozen or more jello prints that I was not satisfied with.

I contemplated slicing them up with the rotary cutter for piecing or possibly borders for journal quilts...

Then....I pulled out the gelatin plates to try some

I almost cut these jello prints into strips with a rotary cutter.

I thought I could piece them as borders?

Then I spied these office stamps.....I just started stamping all over.

It is time to go......so I had to leave this for another day.

I just can't resist office supplies.....it is in my blood.

I think it comes from my days as a legal secretary and an executive secretary with AT&T......staples, paper clips, tape......I love'em all.

Clean Up Cloths......Paper Towels

They were used to clean off the gelatin plates.

I plan to use them in a future recycle project in March.

9 Completed Re-Printed Jello Prints

I am much happier with them now!

I am anxious to turn them into journal quilts....asap!

Now it is time to CLEAN UP THE MESS!

I use one side of the Thread Shed as a temporary WET STUDIO

It works fairly well.
