Spring has arrived in Western Oregon...

Spring has arrived in our little valley
On my way home, I had to stop and snap a photo of our place.
The lighting was just right at this time of day.
Lots of baby calves running through the fields.
That is always a sure sign that Spring has finally arrived...
While the mama cows are grazing, the babies gang up together and have relay races!
This little guy is trying to get his mother to play.....but she is having no part of it!
The Buzzards are Back!
That is also another sure sign that Spring has arrived...
The buzzards roost on the top of the fence posts and open their wings.
I think it is some sort of solar drying method they use.
There were 8 lined up with their wings open just before I got the camera out...
I am getting lots done out in the Thread Shed for future class samples...
I will post images as soon as I can.

Working Cattle
It was just too gorgeous and sunny today here in Western Oregon to stay indoors and bind the sunflower quilt...........besides.....my favorite guy had other plans for me....the moo-ing kind...

We worked cow and calf pairs again. There were about 15 pairs we didn't get to when we worked cattle in May. Today was the perfect sunny day for it. The mama cows and calves are coming into the corral to be sorted. We separate the cows and calves into different pens.
This cow didn't like my camera.....so I had to move so she would come through the gate. She is a pretty cow, but a bit wild.
Here is a gentle giant. We have the nicest bulls on the place this year. They are big, beautiful, calm and easy to work with. This big guy didn't mind the camera at all.
The bull is the next one into the squeeze chute...
He is soooo BIG he hangs out the back end of the chute. He looks like he is wearing the chute! He didn't mind. He stood quiet and patient while we worked on him. I wish the cows and calves were this good in the chute.
My favorite guy is putting fly tags in the bulls ears. They keep the flies off his face during the hot summer weather.

While the guys were loading up all of the equipment I strolled around with the camera. I spotted some foxgloves growing over by the corral fence. I love the dots up inside the blooms...

On my way home I stopped at the top of the driveway........the cattle looked so pretty grazing through the tall grass on the edge of the road.
Now that I am home I need a good scrubbing before I can even think about getting close to my quilts!
I have taken so many photos during the process of creating the sunflower quilt. I decided to put some of them into a slide show so you can follow along with my Sunflower Quilt Journey... A Day On The Coast......Sand Images
We took the dogs to the coast to run on the beach. The tide was way, way, way out. The images of the sand were spectacular. They reminded me of marbled and hand dyed fabrics........yes, I have a one track mind. Look further to see what I did to the images once I was home and imported them into my iPhoto program...

Original sand image
I darkened the image a bit to enhance the lines
I added some brown to make the image look like wood
Now it was time to play with some colors
This reminded me of dyeing fabric.....without all the work
The blues could be used in landscape quilts for sky or water
I could see this pink tone in an applique flower
This light wood color reminds me of the floors in our house
I tried out red just for fun!
This is the second original sand image I chose

You can still see the sandy texture after they are manipulated and colored up.
The detailed images are wonderful.
Again, I darkened up the exposure a bit to enhance the lines and textures
I added more brown to the image, which reminded me of myrtle wood
I continued to add more and more brown to the image
After manipulating the images with temperature controls & saturation, they began to glow. I really like these.
This is definitely in the plans for transfer to fabric.
This would make a great background for a silhouette image...
A third original sand image
Here I go again manipulating the image, enhancing the lines....this is addicting. If you have an iMac, you should give this a try. The controls are built right into your iPhoto software, directly in the program where your photos are downloaded.
If any of these images inspire you, please download them and put them into your artwork. I don't get carried away with all the copyright issues. My motto is.......Share What You know........Share What You Have.
