Friends at the Fence...
Like a flower or vegetable garden,
you must cultivate your creativity to
keep it growing...

After a wet, wet, wet
winter and spring here in Western Oregon,
I was feeling damp, musty and in need of some sunshine.
Last week...
the SUN arrived !
I haven't had a productive week in front of the sewing machine
or at the design wall...
But, I feel so inspired and so motivated...
With each sunny day I made the choice to stay
out-of-doors...
I planned outdoor activities,
like varnishing screen printing frames...
Working in the flowerbeds...
Spending time with the camera
taking photos of what was going on in the yard
from all of this sunshine!
I was feeling the sun on my skin,
breathing the fresh air...
and taking the time to re-charge my batteries.
Take the time to notice the little things, like an apple blossom.
When you least expect it...
you are cultivating your creativity.
After a week out doors, I am ready to get to work in the
Thread Shed...
I have so many ideas jumping around in my head,
I can't wait to get started !
The images above were taken while playing in the yard with Gunnr.
Whenever there is activity in the yard,
the yearling cattle must come to the fence to satisfy
their curiosity...

Feeding Yearling Cattle...
Each summer we make hay...
BIG Round Bales

The Round Bales are fed to the Cows and Yearling Cattle
throughout the fall, winter and early spring.
This morning we are feeding the
yearling cattle...
With the round bales
this has become a one person job...
Round Bales are much more efficient
than small hand bales
Because they are young,
the yearlings are interested in playing with Gunnr.
A metal round bale feeder is placed over the hay...
This prevents the cattle from stomping the hay while eating...
There is less waste and the hay stays cleaner...
The calves will eat this in a day or two...

The days are getting warmer...
The grass is beginning to grow...
We won't be feeding hay for much longer.

Neocolor II Portrait........Double Take
It is 3:30 and I have time to get started on one more
Portrait Quilt...

We were herding cattle last year.
Moving cow and calf pairs to new pasture.
I came around the corner of the barn and these two turned their heads in unison to look at me.
I was so glad I had my camera in my hands.
At this point the calf has been quilted.
I also quilted the gray, dormant blackberry vines.
Mama Cow is also quilted.
She hates the camera, so I was overjoyed she stood still long enough for the shutter to go off.
I quilted leaves in the green background to give it a bit of texture.
My favorite guy came into the Thread Shed
while I was finishing up this portrait...
He looked at this image and said...
" Double Take "

I am happy with the texture and the shape of the piece...

Since losing her pasture mate, Dancer, last year, Freckles has adopted the yearling cattle as her own.
