The judge sentenced 31-year-old Robert Kemp to a maximum penalty for raping a Walgreens employee on New Year's Day. He faces 130 years in prison consecutively.
Monday Kemp arrived in an orange jumpsuit for sentencing, trading out his notorious green jacket he wore during his trial back in May.
He received the maximum penalty for three counts, one of them being a habitual offender.
The defense argued for a lesser sentence claiming he was sexually molested three times during his childhood.
“In my opinion Mister Kemp's childhood, environmental factors contributed to the situation,” says defense attorney Charles Leahy. “There were hard core mitigating factors, that take him out of the worst.”
While the prosecution pointed out he had his chance to rehabilitate while serving prison time in the past. Records show that the two times he was released from prison he sexually assaulted two women within two days.
The victim took the stand and called him a monster who stole her virginity and made her afraid to use public restrooms.
“This is not going to be something that defines who she is in life,” says St. Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney Christy Haws. “It will always be a part of her life. Something she'll be able to overcome as time goes on.”
Kemp declined the chance to take the stand before he was sentenced.
Most of the time he was distracted and staring at the victim in court.
The victim was 19 at the time and it was her first job at Walgreens.
The Indiana Department of Corrections admitted that Kemp was not even supposed to be a free man. He had been mistakenly released from prison just two days before the rape.
