Neocolor II Portrait.......Dorset Sheep

Last summer we spent a day at the
Oregon State Fair

One of our friends was exhibiting this gorgeous
Dorset Ram (sheep)

In the sheep industry his horns are known as a
Full Curl

I couldn't resist playing around with this image in
Photo Shop Elements 4:

Here is the ram printed out on 13 x 19 fabric

Now the fun begins...

At this point he is all colored in with
Neocolor II Water soluble Crayons

Now it is time to paint:

The right horn is painted...
Yes, these crayons have that much pigment in them.

Both horns are painted...

His body and the hay are painted...

Here is the Dorset Ram all painted in

I can't hardly stand myself...
I think I have to take him out to the Thread Shed
and get him under the needle!

Inspiration

My surroundings inspire my quilted textiles. I never leave home without a camera in my hands. For me, quilting and photography just belong together. My camera is an extension of my sewing machine. It captures what inspires me and saves that inspiration in a digital or printed format until I am ready to put it into a textile form.

I spent the day riding along on the tractor baling hay with my favorite guy. I am fascinated by the way the big round baler works. I enjoy watching out the cab of the tractor as the big bales are released from the baler and roll out into the field. It wasn't until we were done for the day, and up on the road a distance from the hayfield, that I realized just how gorgeous all those big, round bales looked as a group in the field.

All my best photography seems to happen when I am with my hard-working husband, Brad. I rode along with him one afternoon as he moved the cattle across the river. He dropped me off to block off a road from the cattle, while he rode ahead to get them moving along. As I patiently waited for the cattle to come into view, I noticed just how beautiful the sky was at that moment. It wasn't long before the cattle came along and ran right through my photo.........the timing was perfect.

Every Monday I gather with the quilters in my tiny community to create quilts. We are so fortunate, at the end of the day as we leave for home.......this is the breath-taking sunset that greets us on our way home.

I was building fence with my husband last spring and couldn't resist snapping a few pictures of the Westfork barn. This weathered old barn wood is beautiful. Just looking at this image again has inspired me to print it on fabric and use it as a background for a journal quilt............I will keep you posted with my progress.

If this image inspires you, please use it in your next textile project. I would love to see what you create with it. I have downloaded it at full resolution, just click on the image to enlarge it and print it out.

Quilt Slideshow

Suzy is my quilting companion out in the Thread Shed. The hum of the sewing machines puts her right to sleep. Click on image above to enlarge it.

Today she helped me put together a slideshow of my more recent quilts. There are several quilts from a few years ago, but the majority of them were created in 2008, and most of them are original designs.

I've never been much good at following directions......... I start out innocently enough purchasing a commercial quilt pattern, rarely open it up to look at the directions, and eventually create my own design. My aversion to reading directions has made me realize I have a new passion for design work.

Seize The Moment

Snow photography is my favorite. When I wake up and the world is white, I quickly throw on my clothes and ask my husband to take me for a ride. The photo you see here was taken at the Westfork Barn where our cattle are fed in the winter.
Click on this photo to enlarge it and see it close up. I love the frosty tree limbs on the left side of the photo.

The white sheep against the snow is one of my favorites. These are North Country and Lincoln sheep. They knew my husband was there to feed them, so they came out of the barn to greet us........it made the perfect photo.

Do things when you are inspired to do them. Don't put them off until a more convenient time.........by then the snow may have melted and the opportunity is lost.
In quilting, use that fabric while you are still inspired to make something with it.
Your enthusiasm will eventually dwindle, and you will forget why you purchased that fabric. Make notes in a journal when you are inspired. You can take out the journal at a later date, see your notes, and that inspiration will come flooding back to you.
We need to cultivate our creativity, like a gardener tending to his flowerbed.
